Asahimas Chemical Sponsoring Mangrove Plantation Project in Indonesia ―Aiming for environmental conservation and regional development― AGC (AGC Inc., Headquarters: Tokyo, President: Yoshinori Hirai), a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals, high-tech materials, has announced that its chemical manufacturing and sales subsidiary, P.T. Asahimas Chemical (ASC, Headquarters: Indonesia), has decided to sponsor the mangrove reforestation project of the KEHATI Foundation. A kick-off ceremony was held on December 22. The kick-off ceremony held on December 22 Mangrove forests not only conserve biodiversity, but also absorb carbon dioxide and reduce damages of the coastal areas from high waves. However, the area of mangrove forests in the world is decreasing year by year due to logging and other factors. This project plans to plant about 140,000 mangrove trees on about 14 hectares of land by 2026. ASC employees and local society will participate in the planting activities to rehabilitate the mangrove forests in Panimbang District, Banten Province, Java, which were washed away by a tsunami in 2018. In addition, the results of the carbon dioxide absorption effect of mangrove trees, which will be academically verified in this project, will be reported to the Indonesian government. This is expected to lead to the study of the possibility of contributing to net zero carbon. The AGC Group has set "promotion of sustainability management" as one of the key issues in its medium-term management plan AGC plus-2023, which was announced in February 2021. It has set a goal of achieving net zero GHG emissions from its business activities by 2050.
